Night One: I Will Not Be Moved
"He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved." Psalm 62:6
David does not say that nothing around him will move. Armies moved, friends moved, his own heart moved more than he cared to admit. He says something smaller and stronger: I shall not be moved. The difference is where he is standing. He only is my rock, he writes, and the word only carries the whole verse. Not the rock and my plans. Not the rock and my savings. When everything else has shifted, what remains is the one thing that was never going to.
Perhaps today something you leaned on gave way, or you can feel it leaning. You do not have to pretend it back into place tonight. The invitation of this psalm is not to grip harder but to notice what is already beneath you, a defence you did not build and cannot crack. Say the words slowly in the dark if it helps: he only. Then let your shoulders down. The Rock does not need your help to hold you, and you do not need to stay awake to be kept. Rest now.
Lord, You alone are my rock and my salvation. When what I trusted gives way, teach me to feel what does not. Hold me while I sleep, for I shall not be moved. Amen.
When the season feels dry rather than stormy, Enough from Your Hand: Seven Nights in the Wilderness spreads a table in the sand.
